Poor Sophie

On Saturday, Matt was playing ball with Sophie.  She was coming out of the water and yelped out.  Her dew claw got caught on a reed and broke it.  Matt called the vet on call and they said to bring her in on Monday to have surgery.  In the mean time, just minimize her moment and give her pain medication.  Matt took Sophie to the vet first thing Monday morning.  I picked her up when I got home later in the evening.  They removed both dew claws.  She had to keep the wraps on for a week. Then she had to wear the cone for almost three weeks because she kept licking the wounds.  They removed the stitches after a week but they opened up a little with her licking so we had to put the cone back on.  The first couple of days, she was miserable.  We gave her prescription pain meds twice a day.  She wouldn't walk the first day so we had to carry her outside to help her go potty.  But after a few days, she perked up and wanted to play ball.  We've had to hid the ball for a few weeks.  We also had to be vigilant about not letting her swim in the canal.  They said absolutely no water on the wounds for at least three weeks because of the risk for infection.
