Bad News For Bridger

Around May 20, Bridger was slide tackled at school during recess playing soccer.  He kept complaining of his heel hurting.  When he tried to play soccer, he was limping so bad he couldn't play because it hurt so bad.  I took Bridger into a pediatrist and he said that his heel had a small fracture in it.  He put Bridger in a walk cast and said that it should be better in 2-4 weeks.

At 4 weeks, the doc said it was still broken and that the ends just weren't coming together.  So he wanted Bridger to come back in two more weeks.  At 6 weeks, he said it was still broken and said that we needed to put him in a hard cast to help it heal.  By now, I was really frustrated because he said it should be healed by now. I just had a bad feeling about it.  I had Matt talk to another podiatrist at work and get a second opinion.  We got into the other podiatrist a few days later.  He said they only way you can see if it's really broken is to take x-rays of both feet.  When you compared the x-rays, the feet looked the same.  In his opinion, Bridger's foot is not broken and it's the growth plate that the other doc thought was the fracture.  He feels like he has "severe's disease" which is an inflammation in the growth plate along the heel from the Achilles tendon pulling on it.  Keeping Bridger in a boot/cast only made it worse.  So, the cast is off.  He's starting physical therapy to help stretch his achilles tendon.  I'm furious with the first doc we went to!!  The second opinion doc said that you can charge insurance a lot more money for a heel fracture than an office visit.  Needless to say, we'll never go back to the first doc again!!!
